without appointment but if in school attendance should only
attend after school hours.
A further clinic is held at Sherington Road School where a
Doctor is in attendance on Tuesday afternoons. A nurse attends
each day as in the clinic mentioned above.
Nursery School
The Rachel MacMillan L.C.C. Nursery School continues its
good work in the St. Nicholas district of the Borough. I am
informed there are 118 Greenwich children attending the school.
It may be mentioned that this school was the pioneer in the
Nursery School Movement. It has now attached to it a Training
School Centre for Nursery School Teachers; the majority of the
children attending are Toddlers, and as it is conducted on openair
lines the benefit to the children of the locality is unquestionably
of great value. It has associated with it a Convalescent Home at
Wrotham to which children are drafted for holiday periods.
Milk, etc., Scheme
The Council has continued to supply milk, etc., to necessitous
cases, each case being investigated especially as to its financial condition
before a supply is granted. The milk may be granted free
or at a reduced cost to:—
(a) Nursing Mothers;
(b) Expectant Mothers from the first 3 months of pregnancy;
(c) Children up to 3 years of age and exceptionable circumstances
to 5 years.
In addition dinners may also be given to nursing and expectant
mothers where the family income falls within the Council's scale. It
is a condition that these dinners must not be taken home, but must
be consumed by the mother herself on the premises.
Particulars of the amount of milk, etc., distributed will be
found in the following tables. The approximate cost to the Council
under this heading during the year was £3,500.
It should be mentioned that included in the total amount of
milk distributed free (table A), is 2,622 lbs. which is granted to
the recipients under the Extra Nourishment Scheme by arrangement
with the local Public Assistance Committee, and the amount of
£264 was recovered from that Authority.
