was No. 101 (Malt Vinegar) and the case was dismissed on technical
grounds.
Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in Food) Regulations.
—Only three infringements were reported by the Public Analyst
under the above Regulations. They were two formal samples of
Sausages and one informal sample of "Neck of Lamb." The two
formal samples contained sulphur dioxide to the extent of 60 and
270 parts per million, and in each case a Warning Letter was sent
to the Vendor. The presence of sulphur dioxide would have
been permissible in both cases had a notice declaring the existence
of such preservative been exhibited in the shop.
In the case of the sample of neck of lamb, sulphur dioxide
was present to the extent of 175 parts per million. This was duo
to the addition of "Brynite" and "Sangster," both of which
are meat preservatives. The use of "Sangster" has long been
discontinued in the meat trade. It was originally used for washing
meat particularly old stock, left over during hot weather, to which
it imparted a bright red appearance. In this case the Vendor,
who pleaded ignorance, was interviewed by the Pood Inspector
and a Warning Letter was subsequently sent.
Dried Milk.—There were no samples taken under the Public
Health (Dried Milk) Regulations, 1923 and 1927, during the year.
Condensed Full Cream Milk.—Five samples were taken
during the year and in every instance the rules regarding proper
labelling were observed. One sample however, did not comply
with the standard laid down under the Public Health (Condensed
Milk) Regulations, 1923 and 1927, by reason of the fact that it
contained only 23.62 per cent. of milk solids, which was the equivalent
of 0.22 pints less than the declared equivalent of 1.5 pints.
Particulars as to the Brand and Importer were forwarded to the
Ministry of Health.
Wholesale Margarine Dealers.—There were no alterations
to the register during the year and the following premises are still
registered under the Food and Drugs (Adulteration) Act, 1928,
where the business of a Wholesale Dealer in Margarine is carried on
in the Borough:—
21, London Street.
144, Trafalgar Road.
42, Old Dover Road.
Artificial Cream Act, 1929.—There is only one premises
registered in connection with the above Act, viz.:—
14, Rochester Way.
