In order to relieve the pressure at the Shooter's Hill Centre
occasioned by the increasing number of outside the Borough
patients admitted to the Council's Maternity Home, an additional
Session is held weekly conducted by Dr. Mizen and the Matron.
The number of attendances made by expectant mothers at this
Clinic during the year was 512.
Otheh Ante-natal Services.
In addition to the facilities provided at the Borough Council
Centre, 335 Mothers were confined and received Ante-Natal treatment at the St. Alfege's Hospital whilst the British Hospital for
Mothers and Babies were responsible for Ante-Natal supervision
in regard to 113 cases, 40 of whom were out-patients necessitating
765 visits.
The Nursing Sisters of St. John the Divine state that 30
Mothers attended their Centre making 185 attendances in all.
The tendency of prospective mothers to have their confinements in institutions rather than at home, is reflected in the increase
in the number of births in institutions, which was 1,376 as compared
with 1,216 for the previous year.
It is a noticeable feature that previous residents of the Borough
who now live on housing estates outside the Metropolitan area,
return to the Borough for their confinements.
