POPULATION.
At the commencement of the year, this Authority received a
communication from the Registrar General, asking for any local
data which might be utilised in the computation of the annual
revision of population. In previous years, it has been pointed out
by your Medical Officer of Health that the population of Greenwich
has not varied to any marked extent.
Since the last Census, 1953 houses have been erected and
occupied with an approximate population of 6,835 persons. The
natural increase in population during this period was 1,315, making
a total increased population of 8,150. Against this figure would
have to be deducted migration, which so far as can be ascertained
is approximately 6,500 persons, thus showing an increase of 1,650.
It is interesting to note that on reference to the Register of
Electors, the number on the Register in 1930 was 63,422, whilst
in 1936, the figure was 63,400. The above information was furnished
to the Registrar General, but apparently received no consideration
for at the moment of going to press, the Registrar General has just
published the figures for Greenwich, namely, 95,900 and it is upon
these figures that the statistics in this report have been based.
The following is the local distribution:—
Estimated Population at Mid-Year, 1936 | |
---|---|
East Greenwich | 39,310 |
West Greenwich | 22,899 |
St. Nicholas, Deptford | 6,193 |
Charlton and Kidbrooke | 27,498 |
95,900 |
