POOR LAW RELIEF AND UNEMPLOYMENT.
Some indication as to the social condition of the inhabitants
of the Borough may be obtained from the following particulars
supplied to me through the courtesy of the Local Public Assistance
Officer:—
Average weekly number of Greenwich Residents in
receipt of domiciliary relief during 1936 2,380
Average amount expended in outdoor relief in
Greenwich £901
These figures shew a considerable reduction over those of the
past few years, indicating a general improvement in industrial
conditions. This has also been noticed in dealing with the applications
for assisted milk supply under the Council's Maternity
and Child Welfare Scheme. 4,646 lbs. of Dried Milk were given to
necessitious families as compared with 5,581 lbs. for the previous
year.
Through the kindness of the Local Manager, Ministry of Labour, the following information is given concerning the number of persons resident in Greenwich who were registered as unemployed during the following periods:—
