There were 12 deaths during 1964 of persons previously notified as
suffering from Tuberculosis, and not removed from the register on the
grounds of arrest of the disease, but six of these were from other causes;
the remaining six were as follows:-
(a) from Pulmonary Tuberculosis M. 66,67,69 F. 54,67,84
(b) from Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis Nil. Nil.
The death rate was 18 per 100,000 of the population, as against the
National rate of 6.3 (1963).
I should like to acknowledge the willing co-operation and facilities
in the interchange of information which has been provided by the Chest
Physician Dr. W.D.R. Thompson, and his staff.
Finsbury Chest Clinic:
(Information kindly provided by Dr. W.D.R. Thompson, Chest Physician).
During the year 1964 the total number of attendances at the Chest
Clinic was 2,210. Of this total, 423 attendances were made by contacts of
notified cases of tuberculosis.
The number of new cases of Tuberculosis taken on the Clinic Register
during the year amounted to 20 (all pulmonary), and in addition a further 12
notified cases were transferred into the Borough.
The total number of notified cases shown on the Clinic Register at
31st December 1964 amounted to 258: this figure includes 16 Non-Respiratory
cases. The previous year's total was 260.
During the year there were 11 deaths of notified cases (6 males and 5
females) i.e. 2 higher than in 1963.
The London County Council Tuberculosis Health Visitor, seconded to
the Chest Clinic, made 783 visits to homes in the Borough during the year.
B.C.G. Clinic:
During the year the B.C.G. Clinic carried out 140 Heaf skin tests, and
18 contacts received B.C.G. vaccination.
Mass Radiography Unit 6D:
(Information kindly provided by Dr.W.D.R.Thompson, Chest Physician).
During 1964 the Mass Radiography Unit examined 40,172 males and
24,189 females making a total of 64,361. Up to the end of 1964 the Unit has
examined 891,996 persons since it commenced operations in May 1950.
One hundred and seventy cases were referred to Chest Clinics,
Hospitals, etc, for further investigation and so far (end of March 1965) 46
