Foreign Bodies:
Eight complaints were received in respect of foreign bodies in
foodstuffs as under:-
Plastic in sausage.
Glass in marmalade.
Black spots in salmon.
Cigarette ash in pork pie.
String in bread.
Dirt in bread.
Plastic in bread roll.
Bristle in bread.
In all the above cases exhaustive enquiries were made and it was
decided in the light of evidence available that no legal proceedings could
be instituted. In every case the complainant was thanked for bringing the
matter to the attention of the department.
Unsound food:
Twelve cases of food alleged to be unsound were reported during the
year by the general public as under:-
Butter mildew.
Sausages unsound.
Canned stewed steak black.
Mouldy steak & kidney pie.
Mouldy pork pie.
Mouldy bread.
Meat pie, mouldy.
Black mould on bread.
Mouldy pork luncheon meat.
Discoloured corned beef.
Dark stains in corned beef.
Unsound hen.
Several of these complaints were found on investigation to be due to
bad management on the part of the shopkeeper. Interviews were held with
the offenders and it is hoped that more care will be exercised in future.
In two cases it was decided that the evidence was sufficient to warrant
proceedings being instituted; details of these cases are reported elsewhere
in the report.
Insects in food:
Six complaints were received of insects in food as under-
Beetle in cheese roll.
Cockroach in meat pie.
Maggots in bacon.
Maggots in pork.
Maggots in nut milk chocolate.
Beetles in packeted potato chips.
It is believed that the increase in the number of these complaints may
be due to the warm weather during the summer months.
