The non-pulmonary cases included 1 foot and sternum, 1 kidney
and 1 endometrium. The notification rate of all forms of T.B.
was 11.2 per 10,000 as against 11.2 for the whole country (1960).
The total number of cases remaining on the Register after adjustment
for deaths and transfers were, on the 31st December, 1961:

There were 6 deaths during 1961 of persons previously notified
as suffering from Tuberculosis, and not removed from the register
on the grounds of arrest of the disease, but four of these were
from other causes; the remaining two were as follows:-
(a) from Pulmonary Tuberculosis:-
A male of 70 resident in a Common Lodging House in the
Borough.
(b) from Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis:-
A female of 45 from miliary tuberculosis, associated
with intestinal disease.
The death rate was 6 per 100,000 of the population, as against
the national rate of 7.5 (1960).
I should like to acknowledge the willing co-operation and
facilities in the interchange of information which has been provided
by the Chest Physician Dr W. D, R. Thompson, and his staff.
MASS RADIOGRAPHY UNIT 6D:
During 1961 the Mass Radiography Unit examined 43,004 males
and 23,569 females - making a total of 66,573. Up to the end of
1961 the Unit has examined 692,037 persons since it commenced
operations in May 1950.
One hundred and eighty cases were referred to Chest Clincis,
hospitals, etc., for further investigation and so far (March 1962)
forty-two cases with a significant tuberculous lesion have been
reported as well as fourteen cases of carcinoma of the lung.
Pinal diagnoses are awaited from thirty-one cases. Clinics
generally record their sputum findings.
For the larger part of the year under review, the Unit operated
at the Mass Radiography Centre, 20 Golden Lane, E.C.l., and for
the remaining period visited firms and organisations including a
stay at the Geffrye Museum, Kingsland Road, E.2. when the Unit
concentrated upon Shoreditch firms not easily accessible to
Golden Lane.
