Considerable improvements have been carried out in a large
sausage and meat preserving factory, and this can now be regarded
as complying with modern standards. Works of modernisation are
also in progress in other types of food premises, particularly
butchers establishments.
BAKEHOUSES:
There are seven underground and nine other bakehouses in the
Borough. In practically every case they are conducted satisfactorily
although one of the basement bakehouses has required
constant supervision. During the year 131 visits were paid to
bakehouses.
LICENSED PREMISES:
There are 150 premises licensed under the 1953 Act for the
sale of intoxicating liquor in the Borough, of which 110 are
operated as public houses, the majority of which carry on a
catering business.
Routine inspections were carried out during 1961, and advantage
was taken when transfers of licences were being made, to inspect
the premises to request necessary repairs and redecoration.
UNSOUND FOOD:
No formal seizure has been necessary during the year. The cooperation
of the trade, established over many years, in connection
with the surrender of unfit foodstuffs, continues satisfactorily,
and results in a good relationship with the various trades
concerned.
A total of 126 visits were made in this connection, apart from
those connected with meat inspection, and 757 certificates were
issued.
