SHOPS
The duty is placed on the Council by the Shops Act 1950 to carry
out inspections of retail and wholesale shops and warehouses to ensure
that adequate sanitary accommodation is provided and that sufficient
means of ventilation and heating are provided and maintained.
From 1959,. additional duties in respect of the provision of
washing facilities, and facilities for the taking of meals in a shop
by employees formerly exercised by the London County Council, were
transferred to the Borough Council
A register of shops is kept in the department and during the year
159 visits were paid by the Public Health Inspectors In two instances
notices were served on the occupiers requiring various matters to be
dealt with,
There have been 58 certificates of exemption in force granted by
the Council allowing use of sanitary accomnodation elsewhere than on the
premises owing to restricted space
RAG & BONE DEALERS
There are no known premises where such trade is carried out, and
which would bring them within the scope of the Bye laws in this
connection. There were until 1958 7 premises where trade was carried
out in rags and waste paper etc, but in three cases such business then
ceased, but has continued in the remaining 4 premises These have
been inspected from time to time
RAG FLOCK:
4 premises in the Borough are licensed for the manufacture or
storage of rag flock and 8 premises are registered to use filling
materials under the Rag Flock and Other Filling Materials Act 1951.
Regular visits have been paid to these premises including 7
inspections in 1960 On all occasions the conditions have been found
to be satisfactory 29 samples of filling materials have been taken
during the 5 year period including 3 in 1960. One sample in 1956
alleged to be "Woollen felt* failed to meet the standard specified and
should have been described as "Rag flock layered*, The matter was
taken up with the suppliers., All other samples were found to be
satisfactory
OFFENSIVE TRADES
One business of long standing is licensed by the Council and the
conditions have been found to be satisfactory. It is situated in the
area adjoining Smithfield Market and is regularly visited.
