There were no deaths but the following complications were reported:-
1 Collapsed right lung.
2 Lt. Otitis Media.
8 Bronchitis.
Measles
There were 310 cases of measles during the year the largest
number being in the second quarter. There was one severe case, 141
moderately severe, and the remainder were mild. All cases made a
satisfactory recovery. Forty-two were removed to hospital. The
following complications were reported:-
2 Pneumonia.
5 Bronchitis.
Scabies
Twenty-six cases were notified.
Dysentery
During the year 203 cases of Sonne dysentery were notified, of
which 64 were from outbreaks in schools or nurseries, and 22 were
parents of infected children. None were severely ill and most of the
cases were in the first quarter.
Gastro enteritis(under 2 years)
There were 29 cases of gastro enteritis in babies during 1956;
13 were moderately severe, the remainder mild. Twenty six were removed
to hospital. All cases made a satisfactory recovery.
Gastro enteritis(over 2 years)
There were 8 cases of gastro enteritis over 2 years all of which
were mild.
Rubella
Although not a notifiable disease each case coming to the know
ledge of the department was investigated with a view to the discovery
of any expectant mother in the first four months of pregnancy who had
not had the disease among the contacts.
Seventeen cases in all became known in 1956. All were mild and
there was no known contact with an expectant mother in the first four
months of her pregnancy.
