The severe fog conditions which prevailed in early December
was an event of considerable Public Health importance, and led
undoubtedly to a large number of deaths and much illness. There
can be no doubt that serious attention ought to be given to the
prevention of atmospheric pollution generally.
There has been little change in the general environmental
conditions prevailing in the Borough during the past few years.
Finsbury has remained in the forefront in providing services
to preserve the health of the aged, and the Part-time Employment
Scheme has attracted nation wide attention.
Improvement of the housing conditions has received, both
from your Council and from my department, continued attention,
and although it is impossible to obtain statistical confirmation, I am
of opinion that there has been some improvement. We all look
forward confidently to considerable further improvement in the
course of the next 2 years when some of the Council's housing
schemes should reach fruition.
It is with pleasure that I thank the Chairman and Members of
the Health Committee as well as the other Committees of the Council
for their continued and generous support, and I also thank most
warmly my staff for their full co-operation and loyal assistance.
I have the honour to be
Your obedient Servant,
C. O. S. BLYTH BROOKE,
Medical Officer of Health.
