I also send you, briefly summarised, the number of deaths from respiratory
tuberculosis, from 1953 to 1957 inclusive. This shows a steady
decline which is part of a national decline of deaths from pulmonary
tuberculosis as such. The number of deaths of patients on the tuberculosis
register who have died from other causes is given alongside the other figure.
1957 shows a rather striking increase in these cases, indicating that the
tuberculosis has been rendered relatively benign by treatment, and other
more lethal conditions have supervened.

Parallel with the decline in the incidence of new cases of pulmonary
tuberculosis diagnosed during the years 1953 to 1957, is the increase in
the number of new cases of non-tuberculous chest diseases seen at the
chest clinic.
