SECTION D
HOUSING
Slum Clearance
Following the decision of the Minister of Local Government and
Planning in 1950 that slum clearance should proceed in London at
the rate of 3,000 premises per annum for the five years 1951 to
1955, agreement was reached between the Borough Council and the
London County Council regarding the areas to be cleared in Bethnal
Green and their allocation between the two authorities. While the
proposals put forward by the Borough Council were not fully satisfled,
it was indicated that those areas not included in the first
five year period would be noted for attention subsequently. The
agreed plan for Bethnal Green allowed for 1,305 premises to be
dealt with in the first five year period and 236 of these would be
dealt with by the Borough Council.
During 1951 detailed surveys of premises in the Arline Street
Area were completed and with the approval of the London County
Council the number of unfit premises to be dealt with was
increased from 77 to 98.
HOUSING ACT. 1949
Commencement was made late in the year on the conversion
under the above Act of 25 outdated flats into 15 flats conforming
to modern standards.
Demolition Orders (Housing Act, 1936)
As a result of official representations, 12 Demolition Orders
were made by the Council during the year, and one undertaking was
accepted that premises would not be used for human habitation.
23 premises were demolished during the year as a result of previous
Demolition Orders.
