HOUSING ACTS 1935 AND 1936—OVERCROWDING.
Little further can be stated as to the extent of
overcrowding in the Borough as revealed by the
Survey taken under the provisions of the Housing
Act, 1935, except to report upon the present statistical
position, as known to your officers.
Whilst it may be assumed that there is a fair degree
of accuracy in arriving at the number of cases that
have been abated during the year, it is not possible
to say whether the additions made during the year
represent all the new eases that are occurring.
At the end of 1936, there were 3,610 cases on the
register. During 1937, 179 cases were added (102
of these being "review cases," i.e., families becoming
overcrowded by reason of children attaining the age
of 1 or 10 years and therefore being subject to a
different classification) making a total of 3,789 cases
to be dealt with. By the end of the year this total
had shrunk to 3,005, the total of 784 removed from
the register being composed as follows:—
