MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During the year, the following deaths were noted :
1. Peritonitis and gangrene of uterus following
labour.
2. Toxaemia resulting from puerperal eclampsia.
3. General peritonitis, ovarian abscess and
peral sepsis.
In addition, two other women died, one from
heart disease and arterio sclerosis accelerated by
incomplete abortion and another from chorion
epithelioma (a form of cancer) and hydatidiform
mole.
Only the first three cases have been counted as
Maternal Mortality for statistical purposes, giving a
rate of 2.3 per 1,000 total births (live and still). In
England and Wales the rate was 3.11 per 1,000
births.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Sixty eight deaths of Bethnal Green infants
under one year of age are recorded as having
taken place during the year. This is equal to
a rate of infantile mortality of 54 per 1,000
births. The infant death rate for London was 60
and for England and Wales as a whole 58.
