The Council has every reason for satisfaction in
this achievement, but I hope it will be remembered
that Public Health is a business. We cannot afford
to stand still, for therein lies the danger of falling
back. Every endeavour must be made towards
progress.
The Maternal Mortality Rate was 1.4 per thousand
births, live and still.
A further reduction in the number of cases of
Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever has to be recorded,
there being 330 cases of Diphtheria and 414 cases of
Scarlet Fever compared with 370 and 436 respectively
in the previous year.
I desire to place on record my sincere sorrow at
the death, on the 12th May, 1936, of Mr. Evan
Richards, Chief Sanitary Inspector. He has left a
monument of over forty years of loyal and efficient
service in Bethnal Green.
I am glad to take this opportunity of expressing
my gratitude to the members of the Public Health
Committee for their many courtesies and their
earnestness in all matters affecting the health of the
people. It is also my pleasure to thank my colleagues
in other departments for their never failing co-operation and the staff of the department as a whole for
their loyal and efficient service.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
Vynne Borland.
