Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Bethnal Green, E.2.
19th May, 1936.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my annual report
relative to the Public Health work of the Metropolitan
Borough of Bethnal Green for the year 1935.
The general death rate at all ages from all causes
was 10.3 per thousand of the population. When
corrected by the comparability factor of the Registrar
General (1.13) the rate becomes 11.6 Avhich is 0.2
lower than the previous year. I should like to state
that owing to the increased expectation of life the
average age of the population is being increased so
that instead of the reduced rates we have experienced
in the last few years we must necessarily be prepared
sooner or later, to see an increase in the general
death rate.
It is very gratifying to record that the Infant
Mortality Rate for the year was the lowest on record
for the Borough, namely, 51 per thousand births.
This compares with 72.6 in 1934 and 66.3 in 1933.
The present rate, however, falls between the biennial
measles epidemic and this factor should be borne
in mind, so that we may be prepared for a set-back
next year.
