The Borough Midwife continues to attend the Clinic when
possible, and on a number of occasions the local midwives
have attended the Clinic, and several patients have been
referred to the Clinic by doctors with a request for a report
on the case.
21 st March, 1934. R. C. Townshend.
MATERNITY CLINIC, HEREFORD STREET.
Dr. Horton reports :
This Clinic, held on Thursday morning of each week, has
completed another satisfactory year. The average attendance
shows a small increase. Friendly co-operation with doctors in
practice in the Borough, with the Borough Midwife and with
the neighbouring hospitals has continued. Miss Basden, M.S.,
F.R.C.S., has kindly given us consultant's opinion as occasion
has required.
It is interesting to note that many more mothers are now
delivered in maternity homes and hospitals than in their own
homes. As these institutions run their own maternity clinics
for mothers intending to enter them for their confinements, a
steady number of mothers leave Hereford Street at about the
7th month of pregnancy to attend these clinics. It is satisfactory
that the mothers appreciate and make use of the
excellent facilities available for their welfare in these institutions.
It is still difficult to persuade mothers to attend for dental
treatment but more have attended this year than last. Postnatal
attendances have been satisfactory but in many cases
attendance at hospital after delivery in hospital has taken the
place of a post-natal attendance at the clinic.
The one premature child weighed 6 lbs. at birth and has
made satisfactory progress since. The mother of the stillborn
child did not attend the clinic after the 26th week of pregnancy.
The child was full-term and was delivered in hospital. The
mother was at work throughout her pregnancy as the father
was out of work. The one miscarriage occurred in a young
woman who had been pregnant six times. Three children
are living and she had had a stillborn child and a miscarriage
previously. This time she miscarried at the 14th week, being
referred to hospital on her second attendance at the clinic.
She has made a satisfactory recovery.
