With regard to the miscarriages, one case occurred in
a primipara who had suffered from smallpox in early
pregnancy, the remaining cases occurred in multipara, and
with one exception were treated by their own doctor or
admitted to hospital, and in every case the patient recovered.
With regard to the stillbirths, two cases occurred in
primipara and were apparently due to abnormally long
labours, and in each case the patient failed to attend The
Ante-natal Clinic after months' pregnancy. In the remaining
four cases, the patients were multipara, and in
one of these there was a history of an abnormal presentation,
and in each case it is again noteworthy to remark
that the patients failed to keep their appointments at the
Clinic during the later months of pregnancy.
With regard to the premature confinements, in Three
cases there was a twin pregnancy, in four cases there was
a history of ante-partum haemorrhage, and in one case there
was a history of an attack of smallpox about the sixth
month of pregnancy.
The Borough Midwife has attended the Clinics when
possible, and reported on her cases, and the local midwives
send cases regularly to the Clinic and have reports on their
patients posted to them under the Council's scheme.
The Post-natal Clinic was held once a week. The
majority of cases were suffering from post-natal debility,
and in addition there were several cases of uterine misplacements,
and a certain number of patients who were
referred to special hospitals for further treatment. The
attendances of post-natal mothers has been disappointing,
owing, I think, to the fact that in a large number of cases
the mothers have to attend at the Infant Welfare or Light
Clinics where they are able to obtain tonics for themselves,
and they are unable to spare the time to attend an additional
clinic.
In cpnclusion, I should like to express my thanks to
the staff of the Department for their excellent work and
unfailing help.
