Closing Orders.
Under Section 17 of the Housing Act, 1957, 4 Closing Orders in
respect of dwelling houses were made during the year; 13 underground
rooms and 8 rooms in other parts of dwellings were closed under
Section 18 of the Act.
Court proceedings were instituted against one person in respect of
the unlawful occupation of an underground room contrary to the provisions
of a Closing Order. The defendant pleaded "Guilty" and was
fined 10s. 0d., and £2 costs were awarded to the Council.
Overcrowding.
Thirteen cases of overcrowding creating offences against the provisions
of Section 78 of the Housing Act, 1957, were investigated
and appropriate action taken to secure the abatement of the overcrowding.

Inspections carried out |
The number of applications received for the issue, and for cancellation,
of Certificates of Disrepair, and for Certificates re undertakings,
showed a decrease when compared with the previous year, as did the
number of Certificates of Disrepair cancelled during the year. At the
end of 1961 there were still 152 Certificates of Disrepair in force.
