applications for housing accommodation was received by the
Housing Committee during the year, but in only a relatively small
number of cases has it been possible to provide the accommodation

During the year 96 applications for housing accommodation
were referred to the London County Council for special consideration
on the grounds of hardship or overcrowding. The following

Repair of Unflt Houses.
Since the War, the repair and reconditioning of unfit houses,
either under the Housing Acts or the Public Health (London) Act,
1891, has been one of the most successful of the Council's housing
activities.
During the year this useful work was continued, and the details
for the year will be found summarised on page 110.
In no case was it found necessary for the Council's Works
Department to enter and carry out, in default of the owner, the
necessary repairs in compliance with a notice served under the
Housing Acts.
Proceedings were taken by the Council against the owner of
No. 150, New Road (vide p. 74) to recover the expenses incurred in
carrying out repairs in default of compliance by the owner with the
notice served under Section 3 of the Housing Act, 1925. An order
was made by the Court for the amount claimed, together with costs.
