Defence (Sale of Food) Regulations, 1943
A sample of "Treble Cream Cheese" was found to contain
46.4%of fat, 12% & of solids-not-fat and 41 „ 6% water. The
Council's public analyst stated that the composition of the
sample corresponded to that of a cheese made from cream
("Single cream"), but not from "Double cream", as defined in
the Pood Standards (Cream) Order, 1951. In the analyst's
opinion the description "treble cream cheese" was calculated
to mislead as to the quality of the article.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food were
informed of this case, and gave authority for the Council to
institute legal proceedings. At the hearing, the defendants
pleaded guilty and were fined £5. Os. 0d. and were ordered to
pay £1o 1s. Od. to the Council.
