Nuisances
During the year, one hundred and seven summonses were
issued for various nuisances under the Public Health (London)
Act, 1936. In twenty-six cases Abatement Orders were secured
and costs amounting to £26. 5s. Od. were awarded to the Council.
In twenty-one cases the summonses were withdrawn, the nuisances
having been abated prior to the Court hearings. In fifty-eight
cases the summonses were adjourned as the necessary works were
being carried out by the defendants. Of the remaining two
cases, one summons was withdrawn as the defendant died before
the case was heard, and the other summons was dismissed.
Seventeen prosecutions were undertaken for failure to
comply with Justices' Orders to abate statutory nuisances. In
seven cases fines amounting to £45. 17s.. Od. were imposed and
costs amounting to £12. 12s. Od. were awarded to the Council.
The remaining ten cases were withdrawn or adjourned as the
necessary works had been, or were being, carried out.

Dog Nuisances
Seven summonses were issued under this byelaw. In five
cases convictions were obtained and fines totalling £2. 10s. Od.
were imposed and costs of £3. 3s. Od. were awarded to the Council.
The remaining two summonses were withdrawn, as the witnesses
were not available.
Housing Act, 1936
Contraventions of Closing Orders
Three summonses were issued in respect of the illegal
occupation of closed underground rooms. In one case a
conviction was obtained and a fine of £5. 0s. Od. was imposed
with £1. 1s. Od. costs to the Council. The other two summonses
were withdrawn as the owners had carried out the works necessary
to make the rooms fit for habitation.
In a further case a summons was issued in respect of the
illegal occupation of a closed house. A conviction was obtained
and a fine of £10. 0s. Od. was imposed with £3. 3s. Od. costs to
the Council.
Food and Drugs Act. 1938
Eight summonses were issued in respect of the sale of food
not being of the nature, substance or quality demanded. In
the first case, the defendant was fined £10. Os. Od. and ordered
to pay £3. 3s. Od. costs; in the second case the Court imposed
a fine of £1. Os. Od. with £3. 3s. Od. costs; and the other
six cases were all in respect of the sale of hot milk drinks. All
the defendants were convicted and fines amounting to £6. 6s. Od.
with £13. 13s. Od. costs were imposed.
Seven summonses were issued under Section 13 of the Act
in respect of the unsatisfactory condition of food premises.
Convictions were obtained and fines totalling £23. Os. Od. with
£k* Us. Od. costs were imposed.
