Death Rate
Seventy-six persons died from respiratory tuberculosis and
ten from non-respiratory tuberculosis. The death rate for
respiratory tuberculosis was 45 per 100,000 population, and that
for non-respiratory tuberculosis was 5.9. The rate for all
forms of tuberculosis was 50.9, which was a slight increase
compared with the rate (47.5) for 1947.
Mass Radiography
Arrangements were made for a mass radiography unit to
operate in Kensington from 28th May to 18th June, 1948. The
apparatus was set up, with the consent of Messrs. John Barker
and Company, in the Council's temporary offices in the Derry
and Toms building. Invitations to attend for X-ray were extended
to employees of business houses in the borough (and in Paddington)
and also the Council's staff. A total of 2,915 persons were
examined.
One thousand, seven hundred and ninety-five men were seen
and of these 41 were asked to submit to a large film being taken.
Five disclosed no abnormality whatever, and in the case of a
further 17 no action was considered necessary. Eighteen showed
signs of probable tuberculosis. The remaining one case failed
to attend.
Of the 1,120 women seen, 27 were invited to have a large
film taken. Six disclosed no abnormality and a further 12 were
classified as requiring no further action. Eight were thought
to be probably tubercular, and one failed to attend.

The staff of the Tuberculosis Dispensary and the building
itself were transferred to the North West Metropolitan Regional
Hospital Board on the 5th July, 1948, and the clinical work in
