Of the cases definitely suffering from rheumatic manifestations, in 23 mitral stenosis is the only lesion (apart
from myocarditis), in 10 there is associated aortic incompetence, and in 3 there is a pericardial involvement in
addition to the valvular lesions. One case had all three lesions. In 5 of the cases of mitral stenosis, the
electrocardiogram shows no deviation and no abnormality. In the control series, 6 cases are likewise normal.
I. Pure Mitral Stenosis. 23 cases.
A. Deviation.
No deviation 15
L.A.D 2
R.A.D 6
In a good many cases, the time which elapsed between the onset of mitral stenosis and the date of the
electrocardiogram was not known, or was of short duration. In four cases, however, at least four years elapsed
and no right deviation was noted. One of the cases of L.A.D. had active rheumatic carditis when the E.C. was
taken. In only one of the six cases of R.A.D. was this really marked.
