ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PUBLIC ANALYST
for the year ended 31st December, 1964.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea.
Your Worship, Ladies and Gentlemen,
During the year 1964, 301 samples of food, all submitted
informally, were examined.
The number adulterated or about which some comment was made was
l4. The incidence of these criticisms may be classified as follows:-
Number of samples Number of samples
examined adulterated, etc.
Milk 97 -
Other foods 204 14
A sample submitted as "Lemon Cream" did not comply with the Food
Standards Preserves Order for Lemon Curd, as it contained only 64 per
cent instead of the minimum requirement of 65 per cent of sugar. As,
however, it contained much more egg than is required or normally
present, it was reported as satisfactory.
An Apricot Nectar was labelled as containing "Apricots, water,
sugar", but contained only 39 per cent of apricots and 20 per cent of
sugar including the sugars natural to the apricots which are probably
about 8 per cent. It therefore contained not less than 4l to 45 per
cent of added water, and although it is not necessary to declare the
presence of added water, the water, if declared, must be in the correct
position.
Some Celery Salt containing 55.8 per cent of salt, was incorrectly
labelled "Ground Celery, Salt." The manufacturers agreed to increase
the proportion of celery seed to 51 per cent.
A "Pure Grape Juice" contained added colour, Amaranth Fast Red
and Green S, without a disclosure of their presence. The bottlers
have not yet decided on what action to take as they are anxious not to
have to inform customers that their product contains added colour.
A can of Mixed Vegetables was stated to contain "Carrots,
potatoes, peas, and swedes", but in fact contained 30.9 per cent of peas,
24.7 per cent of potatoes, 20 per cent carrots and 14.4 per cent swedes,
showing that the above order of disclosure is incorrect.
Some Turtle Soup Tablets were stated to contain wine, but no wine
was present. As soup tablets are a dry product without even the
necessary oily constituents required to retain any semblance to wine
