LEGAL PROCEEDINGS - FOOD AND DRUGS ACT, 1955
UNSATISFACTORY PURCHASES
Fifteen complaints were brought to the attention of the Public
Health Department during the year concerning the sale of the undermentioned
foodstuffs which were not of a satisfactory nature:-
(a) Sale of a mouldy 8-oz. packet of pork sausages.
(b) Presence of a foreign object in a bottle of milk.
(c) Presence of a key in a bottle of milk.
(d) Sale of a currant cake containing a small stone.
(e) Sale of a sliced loaf three slices of which
were mouldy.
(f) Presence of a beetle in a chicken vol-au-vent.
(g) Sale of a jar of apricot jam containing a maggot.
(h) Sale of a polythene packet of bread rolls which
were spotted with mould.
(i) Sale of a packet of streaky bacon which on opening
was found to be sour.
(j) Sale of a mini pork pie containing a live earthworm.
(k) Sale of a packet of 'pasta' infested with weevils.
(l) Sale of a half-pint bottle of sour milk.
(m) Sale of alleged unsound cheese.
(n) Sale of a cheese and chutney sandwich containing a
piece of glass.
(o) Sale of casserole steak not of the quality demanded.
The aforementioned adulterations were thoroughly investigated
and reported to the Public Health and Baths Committee for appropriate
action. In cases (f) (g) (j) (k) (l) (m) and (o) the Committee decided,
having regard to all the circumstances, that no further action could be
taken.
In regard to cases (b) (c) (d) (e) (i) and (n), legal difficulties
or mitigating circumstances negatived the institution of legal
proceedings and warning letters were sent to the firms concerned.
With reference to case (a), the sausages had been delivered to
the shop on the 20th December but had not been sold until the 28th
December, and the Committee had some months previously given a strong
warning to this shop concerning the sale of bacon containing maggots,
stating that any repetition could result in legal proceedings.
The Committee authorised that legal proceedings be instituted
against the Company concerned who pleaded guilty to the offence and
were fined £5 plus £5. 5. Od costs.
