It will be observed from the preceding table that during the
past ten years 315 deaths were attributed to lung cancer, almost eight
times as many deaths as were caused by tuberculosis. During the year
under review 49 Chelsea residents died from lung cancer which is the
highest number recorded in any year. 79.6% of the deaths were in respect
of males whilst 20.4% concerned females, the ratio of mortality being k
males to 1 female.
From the classified table of deaths which appears on pages 11
and 12, it will be noted that of the 49 deaths registered during the
year, 10 occurred within the 35 and under 55 age group, 25 between 55 and
under 75 years and 14 at age 75 and over. This significant increase in
local lung cancer deaths is reflected in the national figures which rose
by 886 over the preceding year, and the following is a summary of deaths
for Great Britain since 1955.:-
