INFANT MORTALITY
During the year the number of infant deaths registered was 16,
five more than the figure for the previous year, giving a rate of
25.8 per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate for England
and Wales was 20.0.
It will be observed from the following summary that of the 16
deaths recorded, 12 occurred before the age of four weeks, which gives
a neo-natal mortality rate of 19.31 and 10 infants died before the
age of one week indicating an early neo-natal mortality rate of 16.1.

The increase in deaths during the year was mainly due to the incidence of prematurity which was returned as 11, compared with four in the previous year.

CANCER OF THE LUNG ANI BRONCHUS
49 deaths (Males 39 and Females 10) were recorded during the year
as compared with 31 deaths (Males 23 and Females 8) during the previous
year.
The following table briefly gives details of the deaths of
Chelsea residents from lung cancer, compared with deaths caused by
tuberculosis, during the ten year period 1955 to 1964:-
