31 deaths (Males 23 and Females 8) were recorded during the year as
compared with 32 deaths (Males 22 and Females 10) during the previous year.
The following table briefly gives details of the deaths of Chelsea

during the ten year period 1954 to 1963:-

It will be seen from the preceding table that during the past ten
years 293 deaths were attributed to lung cancer, six times as many deaths
as were caused by tuberculosis, and the incidence of lung cancer in men
was over three times higher than in women. From the classified table
of deaths which appears on pages 11 and 12 it will be observed that of
the 31 deaths registered during the year, 13 occurred within the 45 and
under 65 age group, and 17 at age 65 and over, and a study of the local
death returns for the past ten years confirms that the 45 and under 70 age
group has consistently been the period of highest mortality. Since 1954
the yearly totals of local lung cancer deaths have fluctuated very slightly
resulting in an annual average of 29 but the national figures during the
same period give cause for concern as will be seen from the following
summary of deaths for Great Britain where the annual average increase has
risen steadily by over 1,000:-
