"PART III" ACCOMMODATION
Section 21 of the National Assistance Act, 1948, requires a
local authority to provide -
(a) residential accommodation for persons who by reason
of age, infirmity, or any other circumstances are
in need of care and attention which is not available
to them; and
(b) temporary accommodation for persons who are in urgent
need thereof, being need arising in circumstances which
could not reasonably have been foreseen, or in such
other circumstances as the authority may in any
particular case determine.
The London County Council are, for the purposes of the above
Act, the "local authority", and they maintain two institutions as
"Part III"accommodation in this area, viz: 367, Fulham Road,
(adjacent to St. Stephen's Hospital) and "King's Mead", Dovehouse
Street.
During the year arrangements were made for the reception of
twenty-two persons at "King's Mead", but occasion did not arise for
enforced removal under Section 47 of the Act, as amended by the
National Assistance (Amendment) Act, 1951. When such transfers
were effected, those concerned were advised that their possessions
would be held in the safe keeping of the County authorities.
