MASS RADIOGRAPHY
Throughout the year, vigorous efforts have been maintained in the
fight against Tuberculosis, and in particular reference to Chelsea, the
following campaigns were conducted:-
(1) 15th to 18th September (inclusive) at St.
John's Mission Hall, World's End.
On request a special campaign was made in the World's End area. This
was preceded by a house-to-house distribution of leaflets, and whilst the
X-ray examinations were being made, a loud-speaker van toured the streets
to publicise the facilities available.
621 persons submitted themselves for X-ray, of which 5 were found to
have radiologically significant lesions, probably tuberculous and requiring
investigation. All were referred to chest clinics. Those referred
represented 0.8 per cent. of the total examined, and although the rate is
generally 0.5 per cent. no special significance is attached to such a figure.
(2) 21st September to 8th October (inclusive)
Chenil Galleries. King's Road.
4,032 persons (1,897 men and 2,135 women) attended for x-ray examinations,
as compared with 4,784 in 1952. However, if the attendance (621) at St. John's
Mission Hall is added to that at Chenil Galleries (4.,032) the total is 4,653,
or a "falling—off" of approximately 3 per cent as compared with that for 1952.
9 men and 12 women were found to have radiologically significant lesions,
and they were referred to chest clinics. In addition 2 men and 2 women were
found to have lesions probably of no clinical significance, and these were
requested to submit for further examination at a later date. The rate of those
so referred was 0.52 of the total; this represents the over-all rate of
discovery of significant lesions in the south-western area of the metropolis.
The Mobile X-Ray Unit visited several industrial premises, business
houses, and an educational centre in the Borough.
Arrangements are already in hand for a Mobile Unit to operate at Chenil
Galleries next summer.
