"PART III" ACCOMMODATION
A local authority is required under Section 21 of the National
Assistance Act, 1948, to provide -
(a) residential accommodation for persons who by reason of
age, infirmity or any other circumstances are in need of care and
attention which is not available to them; and
(b) temporary accommodation for persons who are in urgent need
thereof, being need arising in circumstances which could not
reasonably have been foreseen or in such other circumstances as the
authority may in any particular case determine.
The London County Council are, for the purposes of this Act, the
"local authority", and they maintain two institutions as "Part III"
accommodation in this Borough, namely: 367, Fulham Road, S.W.10, and
King's Mead, Dovehouse Street, S.W.3.
During the year it was considered advisable to arrange for the
reception of 23 persons in such accommodation, and in every instance
admissions were made at King's Mead, Dovehouse Street, It was not
necessary for any recourse to legal action to enforce removal as indicated
in Section 47 of the above Act, as amended by the National Assistance
(Amendment) Act, 1951.
Any anxiety as to the safety of belongings whilst such persons are
receiving due care and attention is obviated by the fact that the London
County Council assume responsibility for their custody. Incidentally
reasonable notice is always given to the County authorities when admissions
are being sought.
