DRUGS.
Four samples of Drugs were submitted for examination, and one of these,
a sample of Tincture of Iodine, was found to be adulterated. In the case
of this sample, the tincture was placed in a very small bottle, and it has
been noticed that the amount of liquid held by these bottles varies
considerably, some bottles holding twice as much as others. They may
be in stock in grocers' and similar shops for long periods, and lose much
of their strength before being sold. In the case of the sample under
review, it was 9.6 per cent. deficient in iodine according to the requirements
of the British Pharmacopoeia, and it is suggested that it would be wiser
if preparations of this type were definitely labelled as being of " approximately
of British Pharmacopoeia Strength " only.
I have the honour to be,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
THOMAS McLACHLAN, A.C.G.F.C., F.I.G.
