LARD SUBSTITUTES.
A sample of lard substitute was examined and found to be quite satisfactory.
All samples of lard substitute examined by vour Analyst have
been satisfactory, but certain products have been placed on the market
which contain water, and which cannot therefore be held to be lard
substitutes.
LEMON BARLEY CRYSTALS.
Two samples of Lemon Barley Crystals were examinel. and both were
found to have been prepared with normal iagreSients, containing powdered
barley or barley flour, citric acid and lemon flavouring.
MEAT PASTE.
Of three samples of Meat Paste, one (Wild Duck Paste) was returned
as adulterated on the ground that it appeared to contain a small quantity
of sulphur dioxide. Certain samples of meat and fish pastes are found
to give reactions for the presence of sulphur dioxide. Whilst the packers
claim that no sulphur dioxide is present, and your Analyst agrees that no
sulphur dioxide had been added originally, he is of the opinion that it
is formed during processing ; it is usually found that after attention had
been drawn to the matter, future samples do not respond to the tests.
SARDINES.
Two tins of sardines were received as the result of a complaint made
at the Town Hall. They were found to be sterile and to contain only
the merest traces of lead, so that no complaint could be made with regard
to the samples examined.
PRESERVATIVES.
Nearly all samples received, including cream, milk, butter, cereals,
cheese, pastes and sausages, were examined for added preservatives, and
no sample, apart from that of Wild Duck Paste mentioned above, was
found to be contrary to the Preservatives Regulations.
TINNED FOODS.
No sample of tinned food was found to contain an excess of tin.
WHISKY.
The sample of whisky submitted was found to have been diluted to the
absolute lowest limit permitted by the Food and Drugs (Adulteration)
Act.
