February, 1937.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
During the year ended 31st December, 1936, four hundred samples
were submitted to Mr. Gerrans or to me for analysis by the Sampling
Officers appointed under the Act. Of these, 301 samples were taken as
"Formal Samples" and 99 were submitted as "Informal Samples."
In the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea the nature of the samples
submitted is not discussed with the Public Analyst, and the wide range
of substances chosen reflects considerable credit on your inspectors.
In the Table are shown the names and numbers of samples examined,
whether submitted formally or informally, and the number of each type
reported as "Adulterated" or "Inferior"—the letter (A) being used to
signify adulterated and the letter (I) to signify inferior. All other samples
were reported as genuine. Samples reported as inferior are of low
quality, though no actual adulteration would be ascribed to them.
