Marriages.—The marriages during the year numbered 459.
This is the highest number recorded in any year since 1883.
The average number for the last 10 years was 404, so that
during the year the number of marriages was 12 per cent in
excess of the average for 10 years. This increased number is of
importance, because the number of marriages that takes place
is recognised to correspond to the prosperity of a district. In
that case the past year was the most prosperous one for the
district for the last 14 years.
The proportion of persons married was 15 per 1,000 of the
population. The marriage rate for the whole of London was
18.5 per 1,000—the highest rate recorded since 1878.
Deaths.—The registered deaths exclusive of those of nonresidents
which occurred in the Public Institutions situated in the
District, but inclusive of those of residents which occurred in
outlying Institutions numbered 1462. This corresponds to a
death rate of 25.1 per 1,000. The death rate for the whole of
London was 18.2 per 1,000.
These deaths were distributed over the District as follows:—
Limehouse 536
Ratclifif 244
Shad well and Wapping 169
East London Children's Hospital 342
Drowning Cases 10
1301
Deaths occurring outside the District among
persons belonging thereto 446
1747
Deduct deaths occurring within the District
among persons not belonging thereto 285
1462
This number is 77 more than that registered in 1896.
