TO THE
BOARD OF WORKS
FOR THE
LIMEHOUSE DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,
In presenting to you my first Annual Report, I may
remind you that my appointment dates from the 1st of October,
For three months Dr. Stedman acted as substitute for Dr. Rogers,
your highly esteemed and respected late Medical Officer of
Health.
With the exception therefore of the last three months
of the year, the facts on which this Report is based did not
come under my personal notice.
The population estimated to the middle of 1897 was 58,508.
Births.—The births registered during the year numbered
1997, of which:—
1197 were registered in Limehouse.
471 „ „ Ratcliff.
267 „ „ Shadwell.
62 „ „ Wapping.
This corresponds to a birth rate of 34.1 per 1,000 for the
year, or exactly the same as the average for the last 10 years.
The birth rate is 4.1 per 1,000 more than that of London as
a whole.
