SLAUGHTERHOUSES AND COWHOUSES.*
Fifteen slaughter-houses (nine in Poplar and six in Bromley), and
12 cow-houscs (five in Poplar and seven in Bromley), were inspected
upon receiving notices from the owners of their intention to apply
for the renewal of their licenses to the Landon County Council. In
no instance was the Board advised to oppose the license.
The Sanitary Committee, at their meeting held 24th November,
considered the communications from the London Chamber of
merce (meat and cattle trade section) and the London Butchers
Trade Society in opposition to the scheme of the Public Health
Committee of the London County Council, proposing the abolition
of private slaughter-houses in London and the establishment of public
abattoirs, and the Committee recommended the Board not to approve
the proposal, but to express the opinion that a proper system of
inspection, and the marking of meat, would be sufficient.
