North-east 89 deaths equal to 153 per 1,000 births.

under one year were 56 and equal to 431 per 1,000 births.
The deaths of children over one year and under five years
of age, were 303 in number ;the deaths under five years therefore
were 912 (as compared with 1,022, 951, and 1,111, in the
preceding three years successively), being equal to 248 per 1,000
births; the relative proportion, in London, as a whole, being
241. The deaths of illegitimate children under five years of
age—118, 129, and 104, in the preceding three years respectively—were
126 in 1897 (63 of each sex), of which 107
were registered in the Town sub-district, and 19 in Brompton.
These deaths were equal to about 63 per cent, on the 194
births registered as illegitimate. Of the 126 children, 28 only
outlived the first year.
Infantile Mortality in London.—It has already
been stated that the deaths of children under one year of age
in Kensington, to 1,000 births were 166, and that the proportion
in London, as a whole, was 159. The Kensington
rate was exceeded in 15 of the sanitary districts, viz.: St.
Pancras, 168; Poplar, 170; Hammersmith and Bethnal Green,
171; Rotherhithe, 174; Newington, 177; St. Martin-in-the
Fields, 178; Shoreditch, 183; Clerkenwell and Holborn, 184;
St. George's, Southwark, 189; Bermondsey, 190; Limehouse,
193: St. Saviour, Southwark, 195; and St. George-in-theEast,
197. In Westminster the rate (166) was the same as in
Kensington. In the remaining 27 districts the rate was lower
than in Kensington, and in 20 of them it was lower than
the rate in London.
