Births and Birth-Rate in the Sanitary Districts.—
The births in North Kensington, i.e., the part of the parish
north of Holland-park-avenue and High-street, Notting-hill,
were 2,579 and the birth-rate 29.8 per 1,000 persons living.
The births in South Kensington, i.e., the part of the parish
south of those streets, were 1,104 and the birth-rate 13.1 per
1,000. The birth-rate in the several sanitary districts was as
follows:—
North 1,070 births, or 32.6 per 1,000 persons living.
North-East 581 births, or 19.3 per 1,000 persons living.
North-West 682 births, or 41.5 per 1,000 persons living.
Central 542 births, or 20.0 per 1,000 persons living.
South-East 350 births, or 10.9 per 1,000 persons living.
South-West 458 births, or 14.3 per 1,000 persons living.
The high birth-rate in the North-West district is suggestive of an under-estimate
of the population, which, however, is based upon the census of March, 1896. At that
time the population of the "special area" was ascertained at 3,740 or thereabouts.
In June, 1896, it was found to have increased to 4,000 Inspector Steward,
I may add, has for some time .past had suspicions that the population of his
district, as a whole, was increasing somewhat rapidly.
The births in the "Notting-dale" special area were 130,
or 32.5 per 1,000 persons living.
In the several sanitary districts the excess of births over
deaths was as follows: North, 462; north-east, 197; northwest,
153; central, 103; south-east, 58; south-west, 43. In
North Kensington the births exceeded the deaths by 875;
the excess of births in South Kensington being to the number
of 141 only. In the "Notting-dale" special area the deaths
exceeded the births to the number of 93.
The registered births of illegitimate children in the parish,
as a whole, were, as stated, 194 (27 fewer than in 1896), viz.,
males, 97, and females, 97. Of these births 183 were registered
in the Town sub-district, which includes the parish
workhouse, at which institution out of 149 births (males 65,
females 84, including nine of still-born children—males 5
females 4), 44 were illegitimate. In the parish generally the
