House-to-House Inspection.—An inspection of the
houses in the Special Area, other than common lodging-houses
—which being under the jurisdiction of the County Council
were passed over— was made in May and June by Inspector
Steward, with the assistance of Inspector Pettit. The Sanitary
Committee, upon the joint report of these officers, directed the
issue of 222 notices in respect of 210 houses (out of 257 in the
district) which were found to be defective in one or more
respects, and a large amount of work was done, supervision of
which occupied much of the time of the inspector for the
district during the remainder of the year. Particulars of
interest observed, connected with the occupancy of the houses
in the several streets, deserving of record, are here reproduced
from the seventh four-weekly report, as follows :—
