made are assessed in accordance with the Council's scheme at charges
already agreed upon. All cases dealt with during the period are
duly reported to the Assistance Sub-Committee of the Maternity
and Child Welfare Committee.
Convalescent Treatment.—Cases of mothers and children
who, in the opinion of the Medical Officer would be materially
benefited by a course of convalescent treatment, are dealt with from
time to time by the Committee as required. The Committee set
aside the sum of £100 per annum for such cases.
Minor Ailments.—Quite trifling minor ailments are dealt
with by the Health Visitor. Other cases requiring hospital attention
are dealt with by arrangement with St. John's Hospital,
Lewisham, to which Hospital the Council makes a contribution of
£50 per annum for this service.
Home Nursing.—Children found by the Health Visitors to be
in need of special nursing at their homes, are dealt with by the
various Nursing Associations in the Borough to whom the Council
make appropriate payment for such services.
Dental Treatment.—A qualified Dentist attends at the
Tuberculosis Dispensary, Maze Hill, once a fortnight to deal with
cases under the purview of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee,
which are referred to the Dentist by the Medical Officers
of the Clinics. Extractions, scalings and such minor conditions
are dealt with free, but when the provision of teeth is necessary,
the Dentist draws up an estimate, the patient is assessed a certain
amount, and assistance from outside sources is obtained as far as
possible. The matter is then brought to the notice of the Assistance
Sub-Committee to decide how much the Council shall give towards
making up this amount, and for this purpose the sum of £60 per
annum is set aside in this Committee's estimate.
The report is slightly abridged, it not being considered necessary
to reproduce the several application forms, etc., in use.
The following tables show (a) the number of visits made by
the Health Visitors during the year in connection with Births and
cases of Infectious Diseases, and (b) number of Infant Consultations
and Pre-Maternity Clinics attended.
