INDUSTRIAL AND PROFESSIONAL OCCUPATIONS
OF RESIDENTS.
Taking the Census Returns as the latest official data it will be
seen from the table shown below that there are 44,319 (31,741 Males
and 12,578 Females) Greenwich persons actually engaged in industrial
or professional occupations.
Persons engaged in Commercial, Finance, Insurance and
Public Administration, the majority of which can be reasonably
termed sedentary occupations number 11,467, of which 7,199 are
Males and 4,268 are Females and is approximately 25 per cent. of
the total workers.
Among the industries included in Unskilled Workers General
Labourers, etc., come first with 5,245 Males and 289 Females.
Persons engaged in Personal Service, such as Domestic Servants,
Charwomen, Publicans, Barmen, Restaurant Keepers come next
with 847 Males and 4,325 Females, followed by Metal Workers with
4,622 Males and 437 Females, and Transport Workers, 4,465 Males
and 220 Females.
19,384 (13,778 Males and 5,606 Females) Greenwich residents
work outside the Borough, whilst 16,373 (13,802 Males and 2,571
Females) workers belonging to other areas come into the Borough
to work. This gives a nett daily outward movement of 3,011
persons.
The number of Greenwich residents actually working within
the Borough is 16,259 Males and 6,261 Females, a total of 22,520.
The industries and sources of employment in the Borough are
to be found close to the proximity of the river Thames which forms
the Borough Boundary on the North Side. Chief among these
are large Cable and Engineering Works, Gas Works, Soap and
Candle Works, L.C.C. Generating Station and Tramway Car Repair
Depot, London Electric Light Supply Corporation Works, Glass and
Bottle Manufacturers, Merryweathers' Works (Fire Engines), etc.
