of 221b. tins of margarine, and 2 cases pea soup powder. In each
case the Medical Officer of Health of the district to which such
consignments have been forwarded has been advised of the matter.
No seizures, of unsound food were made during the year, but
a number of tradesmen voluntarily .surrendered certain articles of
food as unwholesome or unfit for the food of man in ad'ditioh
to the meat already referred to, particulars of which are set out
on page 29.
Ice Cream Premises.—There were 54 premises known at the
commencement of the year where the manufacture of this commodity
was carried on; 39 have been added during the year and 11
taken off, leaving a total of 82 premises. These premises were
inspected on 9G occasions, and improvement .required by way of
cleansing of the premises in 9 cases.
Bakehouses.—Eighty-eight inspections have been made of the
various Bakehouses in the Borough, and 45 nuisances found therein
have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and! 38 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred, and thirty-six samples
have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale of Food
and Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for analysis,
of which 422 were certified to be genuine and 14 adulterated,
the adulterations thus being equivalent to 3-21 per cent, of the
samples taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 111 were milk,
of which 6 were certified to be adulterated; the remaining adulterated
samples were 5 of vinegar, and 3 of dripping.
Proceedings were taken in 8 cases, resulting in fines and costs
being imposed in C instances. The remaining two cases were dismissed.
one on account of warranty proved, and the other owing
to the defendant's good character, costs being granted.
A warning letter was sent in 4 cases.
