The cases of this disease during the past year
were 188 fewer than the total in 1897, and 487 fewer
than 1896, the year of the maximum (790) since the
commencement of notification. Fewer cases were
reported in 1890 (215), 1891 (263), and 1894 (289),
but in each of the other years the total was in excess
of that for last year, which latter was 195 below the
corrected annual average. In the Metropolis the
16,917 cases recorded last year were 6,200 below the
corrected annual average for the eight preceding
years, and the smallest total recorded since 1891,
when 11,398 cases were reported. In 1890 15,330
cases were reported, 1,587 fewer than last year.
In comparison both with the corrected annual
averages and the totals for 1897, the reduction in the
prevalence of this disease was equivalent to 38 per
cent, in Paddington and 26 in London.
From North Paddington 253 cases were reported,
178 fewer than in 1897, and 166 fewer than the
corrected annual average. Smaller totals were
recorded in 1890 (183), 1891 (217), and 1894 (238).
The maximum (664) since the introduction of
notification was recorded in 1896. From South
