The home conditions of these 104 cases were investigated. In
the majority of cases the sanitary state of the home was found to
be satisfactory, the average number of persons per room being 1.4.
In 9 cases, however, the conditions were found to be unsatisfactory,
the patient's family occupying only a single room. As compared
with the years 1926 and 1925, however, there is a distinct improvement—when
18 and 19 families respectively were found to be
occupying a single room.
During the year 70 of these 104 cases were receiving hospital,
sanatorium or other institutional treatment.
At the end of 1927 there were 425 women and children nondispensary
patients (a decrease of 39 as compared with 1926)
including new cases notified during the year on the register, and
1,089 visits were paid by the female Sanitary Inspector (Miss J.
Round) to the homes of these patients.
Efforts are made, in as many cases as possible, to induce nondispensary
patients to attend the Tuberculosis Dispensary, and
during 1927, 41 cases were transferred, 27 of these being new cases.
Subsequently 7 of these transferred cases were removed from the
register, "Disease cured."
It is satisfactory to record that the efforts to secure protection
against infection of other members of the family have met with
considerable success, e.g., separate room or bed was found to be in
use in 40 per cent. of the cases; and 68 patients consented during
the year to avail themselves of institutional treatment.
Adult Male Patients.
There were 287 adult male patients not on the Dispensary roll
on the register at the end of 1926, and 76 were new cases notified
during 1927. Of these new cases 10 died during the year.
The following table gives particulars of the non-dispensary new cases notified in 1927:—
