for the sale of milk, and in 2 cases the sale of milk from registered
premises was discontinued. In 13 cases registration was transferred
on account of change of proprietorship. All milk shops are
kept under inspection and during the year 731 inspections were
carried out and 24 notices were served to remedy defects found on
inspection. These mainly referred to dirty and unsuitable premises
and other minor defects.
In addition to the above are 22 premises in which sterilised
milk in sealed bottles only is sold. It is the practice to register
informally these premises, but it is doubtful whether they
come within the provisions of the statutory requirements as to
registration. It is understood that legal proceedings are pending
in another Borough to test this question. In view of the fact,
however, that there is a risk in small shops that bottles may
be opened and portions of the contents sold, it would appear to
be desirable that the occupiers of all premises where milk is sold
in sealed bottles should be subject to the statutory obligation to
be registered as purveyors of milk.
