The steady decrease in the birth-rate is an unsatisfactory
feature of the Vital Statistics of the Borough during 1926.
Illegitimate Births.
Of the total births registered as belonging to Battersea 111
or 3.74 per cent. were of illegitimate children as compared with
106 or 3.35 per cent. in 1925, 108 or 3.44 per cent. in 1924, 115
or 3.35 per cent. in 1923, and 128 or 3.49 per cent. in 1922.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in the Borough during 1926
was 2,547. Of these 948 were deaths of non-residents and were
transferred to the districts in which the persons ordinarily resided.
There were on the other hand, 361 deaths of Battersea residents
registered outside the Borough. The total (corrected) number of
deaths of persons belonging to the Borough was 1,960 (males 994,
females 966). This gives a recorded death rate of 11.4 compared
with 11.6 for London and England and Wales respectively.
The distribution of the deaths and the death-rate per 1,000
inhabitants for each of the Nine Wards is shown in the following
Table.
